Viewing organic things through the eyes of a machine with Robot Koch

After last year`s release “Death Star Droid” Berlin stromtrooper Robot Koch kept himself busy. He finished off the new Jahcoozi album “Barefoot Wanderer” which is coming out on Bpitch Control this spring. Coinciding with the release of his “Death Star Droid Remix EP” (incl fresh mixes by Loops Haunt, Blue Daisy etc). Robot Koch was on tour in the USA and Mexico, stopping by in LA for a stunning gig at Low End Theory and finally settled down for 2 months in Mexcio City, where he found time to work on new material with his girlfriend and singer Grace . Visiting some ancient Maya and Atztec sites and Pyramids sure added to the spaced out magic of the new EP. The new material is dark, percussive and surreal. Like an audible painting my leonora carrington. Its dubby but not dubstep, rather next step maybe. The songs are heavy and dripping with analog and organic sounds…. Lo Fi field recording mashed up with heavy bass and unquantized grooves. Live sounds like guitars work like samples. Vocal talent Grace, that was already featured on the Death Star Droid album and the last EP brings in a dark and yet soulful gospel vibe over Koch’s twisted beat concoctions. This EP is only a taster of the new album that should be ready to drop in october on Project: Mooncircle.

Robot Koch was kind enough to answer a few questions about himself and his work.

Why do you call yourself Robot Koch?:

Why a Robot? my real name is Robert, people just nickname me Robot because I don't sleep and make beats like a machine apparently.

Where are you from?:

Berlin.

How long have you been doing what you do?:

Started making music at the age of 15. Now I am 32, so do the math. ;)

You have a very rich earthy sound that seems to stray into glitched out tangents and back again. But in a Zen like way. Who or what are your

inspirations for the music you make?:

Music inspires me, everything from Moondog to Slayer, from John

Coltrane over Radiohead, to weird folk stuff, and back to Hip-Hop...I

listen to a lot of different stuff.

But also art inspires me... The EP "Listen to Them Fade" was sort of

done under the influence of painter Leonora Carringtion which I

discovered in a bookshop in Mexico City. Sometimes its just clouds and

the way the light looks that inspires me.

Tell us something about this EP that you haven't told anybody yet.:

I made most of it in the kitchen in our flat in Mexico City, when I

lived there in February/March, some of it on a plane and it was the first

time i made music again after a 2 month break.

What's next?:

I`m involved in a project called NRBLN with Jahcoozi, Gebrüder

Teichmann and Modeslektor. Its a cross culture project with artists from

Berlin and from Nairobi in Kenya. We went there twice already to work

with the local musician and vocalists and do some sort world music 2.0.

Dubstep meets traditional African chants, African rap meet Techno beats

and 11 year old kids from the biggest slum in Nairobi prove that they

got more fire than all the MCs in the US Hip-Hop charts combined.

Also I will be working on my album which should drop in late 2010. I am

working on new stuff with my singer grace for her album too, which is

gonna be amazing!

Banging through the night with the Knight Riderz

Welcome Knight Riderz strait out of Canada these two make a perfect example of what a Multi Genre Bass Music producer is. They have everything drums that bang, melodies that romance, and synths that rip your senses into new dimensions. Knight Riderz have a heavy harmonic flavor all their own. This is my version of "Take a Penny, Leave a Penny". Only with music. Soundcloud did a really interesting thing with there widgets, allowing people to make pools of tracks that are community funded. I put these groups together hopeful to find new music that could be categorized as multi Genre Bass Music. So far it has worked pretty well. Hopefully this will be a good resource/starting point for both DJ and Producer. Since they can both share and find tracks very easily. These are ever growing sources of tracks, most of them free! I would recommend checking on it frequently. Soundcloud has made some new rules in regards to downloads. Some tracks have limits to the amount of times they are downloaded. But I believe that they reset every month. If you have a track you would like to share please drop it in the appropriate drop box located above each player. My general influences include electronica from all eras. Says Kminus1. Genres including drum & bass, break beat, big beat, dub-step, glitch, and acid house. I also enjoy elements of metal music, guitar distortion, feedback and wild drum sections! The Bristol music scene is another of my influences. Artists such as Roni Size and Massive Attack. Other musical influences include Peaches, The Hacker, Nine Inch Nails, Lemon Jelly, Daft Punk, Adam Freeland, Skull Disco, Amon Tobin, Ltj Bukem, and Photek amongst others.

More artists who've been hugely influential to me include, Tangerine Dream (Rubycon LP), Squarepusher, Fat Boy Slim, Vivaldi, Amon Tobin, Eat Static, Futures Untold, Rage Against The Machine, Nick Drake, Adam Freeland, Koma & Bones, Evil 9, Skull Disco, and The Hacker

Some non musical influences are free parties, gyrating women, and falling on the floor in a strip club. I suppose you could say, there isn't much that doesn't go into it!

Multi Genre Ragga Bass-Core by Dr.Colossus

Dr. Colossus. This is someone that I just recently met. He is multi-genre bass dj/producer with a fetish for the Ragga sound! Dr. Colossus started growing his Glitched-Out Bass-Driven Ragga Beast by planting his seed deep in Punk around 2000 and feeding it a steady diet of UK Hip-Hop, Drum and Bass, Nu-School Jungle and Break-Core. I even heard, that for a nominal fee, you can get him to bring the Beast to your town to show your friends! ;-)

Dr. Colossus was kind enough to share a mix with us, er....half of a mix with us. I guess that the other half is for him to dispose of as he sees fit! He even wrote something about himself which is great because now I don't have to. =)


My name is Dr. Colossus and I'm a Jungle / Hip Hop / Punk / Yardcore / Multi-GenreBass Music dj/producer from London. I started out, a few years back, doing ragga-jungle. But, these days, I play mash-ups and make mash-ups of everything.

This mix, found below, is a recording from the first part of a show I played at a rave called Fuxmas that was set up by NFA at the end of 2007. The rave is called Fuxmas because its always takes place around Christmas. This is one of my favorite parties because it has this really nice family vibe with free food, quizzes and stuff. I cut off the second half because it has some exclusive stuff that I didn't want to put out on the internet. You're going to have to catch me live to catch that stuff.

It was very surreal playing this rave. I was all prepared to travel for miles to get to the rave and then I looked up the location on Google Maps and it turned out it was literally across the road from my house. Because it was around Christmas, I had family staying over at my house which made it a very surreal night. My night went from playing a gig at a squat party, to being a bit wrecked and crossing the road for some dinner with my grandma (she's a cool grandma) , to finally going back to the rave. Although its got some rough edges, and is a bit short, this is probably my favorite mix that I have done.

Wrong Chris. A 24-year-old dj/musician, writer and Graphic Design student from Vancouver BC, Canada whose style of mixing is eclectic.
